INTRO:
The episode begins with a sequence of different scenes of people trying to cope with a world where time has stopped, including Churchill as the Holy Roman Emperor, the Doctor as a university professor, and Charles Dickens as a bartender. All of them are aware that time has stopped and that they are living in a reality where past, present, and future have all been mixed up.
ACT 1:
The Doctor, who is still a university professor, is visited by a mysterious woman who tells him that she knows how to restore time to its proper flow. The woman turns out to be River Song, who is wanted by the authorities for a crime she did not commit. The Doctor agrees to help her and the two of them set off to find the person responsible for the crime, a man named Dorium Maldovar.
ACT 2:
The Doctor and River find Dorium in a hidden bar in the Under-Plaza of New York City. Dorium reveals that he knows who is behind the disruption of time and warns them that the cost of fixing it will be the death of the Doctor.
ACT 3:
The Doctor and River travel to a pyramid in Area 52, where they find the man responsible for stopping time, who is revealed to be none other than the Doctor's own future self. The future Doctor has become a tyrant, ruling over the universe with an iron fist, in order to prevent the universe from being destroyed in a catastrophic event known as "The Fall of the Eleventh". The future Doctor believes that the only way to prevent this is for the current Doctor to die, which will allow time to resume its normal flow.
ACT 4:
The Doctor refuses to accept his future self's solution, and instead tries to find another way to restore time. He consults the Teselecta, a shape-shifting robot that can take on the appearance of any living being. The Doctor orders the Teselecta to take on his appearance and allow the future Doctor to "kill" him, which will restore time and also make it appear as though the Doctor has died.
ACT 5:
The plan succeeds and time is restored, with the Doctor having faked his own death. River is distraught at the thought that the Doctor is dead, but the Doctor appears to her and reveals that he is still alive. The two of them finally get married, with the Doctor using his sonic screwdriver to officiate the ceremony.
EPILOGUE:
The episode ends with River visiting the grave of the Doctor, believing him to be truly dead. However, the Doctor appears behind her, having used the TARDIS to travel back in time and fake his own death. The two of them share a happy reunion and ride off into the sunset together in the TARDIS.
