Chapter 1
Despair of the Endless had seen many deaths in her time, but none quite like Cleopatra's. As the last of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Cleopatra was a woman of great power and influence. But as Despair watched her take her final breaths, she could see that the queen was filled with regret and sadness.
"I have failed my people," Cleopatra whispered, her voice barely audible. "I have failed myself."
Despair knew that Cleopatra's soul would soon be hers to claim, but she also knew that her sister Death would want to claim it as well. And so, she began to argue with Death over who had the right to claim Cleopatra's soul.
Chapter 2
As Despair and Death argued, Cleopatra's soul hovered between them, uncertain of where it should go. It was then that Despair saw something in Cleopatra's eyes that she had never seen before - a glimmer of hope.
"Let me take her," Despair said to Death. "I can show her that even in death, there is hope."
Death hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement. And so, Despair took Cleopatra's soul and led her through the underworld.
Chapter 3
As they journeyed through the underworld, Despair showed Cleopatra the different levels of existence. She showed her the souls of those who had lived a life of despair, and those who had lived a life of hope.
Cleopatra watched as the souls of the despairing were tormented by their own regrets and failures, while the souls of the hopeful shone with a bright light. And as they traveled further, Cleopatra's soul began to shine as well.
Chapter 4
Finally, they reached the gates of the afterlife, where Cleopatra's soul would be judged. Despair knew that this was the moment of truth - if Cleopatra's soul was deemed worthy, it would be allowed to pass through the gates and enter the afterlife. But if it was deemed unworthy, it would be sent to the darkness forever.
Cleopatra's soul stepped forward, her eyes shining with determination. And as she stood before the judges, her soul was bathed in a bright light. Despair knew that her mission had been successful - Cleopatra's soul had found hope.
Chapter 5
As Cleopatra's soul was allowed to pass through the gates of the afterlife, Despair watched with a sense of satisfaction. She had done what she had set out to do - to show Cleopatra that even in the darkest moments of life, there is always hope.
As she turned to leave, Despair saw her sister Death waiting for her. But instead of arguing with her, Death simply nodded her head in acknowledgement.
"Thank you," Death said. "You have shown me that there is always hope, even in the realm of Death."
Epilogue
Despair returned to the Dreaming, where her siblings awaited her. As she told them the story of her encounter with Cleopatra, they listened with interest.
"That was very noble of you," said Destiny.
Despair shrugged. "It was just my duty. But I will admit, it felt good to show someone the hope that exists even in the darkest moments of life."
The Sandman smiled. "Well done, sister."
And as they sat together, discussing the mysteries of life and death, they knew that they would continue to guide and comfort those who needed it most.
